Waikereru Wild Lab Tiaki Taiao inspires kaiako and akonga in creative, inquiry-based workshops to understand what has happened to local ecosystems since human arrival, and to take part in restoring these to a state of ora (health, well-being).

Mātauranga, Science, Arts and Technology are taken into the wilderness, resulting in real world, immersive learning that is vivid and unforgettable.
Students and teachers investigate what’s happening in local ecosystems and learn about the lives of each of the endangered plants and animals. They discover that by drawing on western sciences and mātauranga Māori, we can make a powerful difference to the landscapes we are part of, and the planet.
Our educational aims are for participants to:
- Increase their understanding of how local ecosystems work, with their plants and animals
- Enhance their sense of kinship with the living world
- Increase their connection with others
- Develop a clear vision of the future we want to live in
- Increase interest in western sciences and mātauranga Māori linked to nature.
Wild Lab Tiaki Taiao is based at the award-winning Welcome Shelter in Waikereru, a haven for rare, endangered species of native birds, plants and animals on the East Coast of NZ.
Workshops
Leading international scientists, Mātauranga mō Te Taiao experts and the award winning team at the Wild Lab Tiaki Taiao have joined with Dame Anne Salmond and the Longbush Ecological Trust to design immersive and experiential workshops.
